Data recovery can be very expensive, so it’s no wonder many people try and find a clause in their insurance documents that will cover data loss.

Most standard homeowner’s policies do not cover data loss, but it would be worth speaking to your insurance agent first. Protecting your data will likely be a prerequisite – so if you haven’t backed up, you probably won’t be able to claim anything.

Data lost through damage to storage media caused by natural disasters is more likely to be covered than simple human error, so be sure to get a detailed report from your data recovery company detailing what’s wrong.
