Hard disk drive failure can fall into two main categories - physical and logical, or a combination of both. Physical failure can often be attributed to a head crash where a moving component or circuit board has failed. Logical failure is harder to diagnose. Symptoms such as corrupted data can be caused by media degradation, bad sectors or malware. Regardless, if you are unable to recover the data yourself, you will most likely need a data recovery expert.

Hard drives are not designed to be repaired and require very specialist data extraction tools to have even a remote chance of success. Where physical failure is diagnosed, more often than not our data recovery technicians will need to rebuild the hard disk drive using donor parts. Whilst this can be a time consuming and intricate process, as long as the disk platters are undamaged the user can be confident that their data remains intact.

Logical damage is more difficult to diagnose. If online data recovery software has been unable to recover the data, chances are your data may well be damaged or corrupted. If this is the case our data recovery technicians have to repair files and directory structures. Often exasperated by bad sectors and fragmentation, the hard disk drive undergoes a deep scan on receipt, bypassing any blocks that return errors. Almost all logical failures are recovered without opening the hard disk drive chassis and often the drive remains physically healthy.

Regardless of the failure, advanced tools are required to be certain of a successful outcome. In our laboratory, our data recovery technicians will exhaust all options to recover your data. With industry leading data recovery technology at their disposal, we are able to open a hard disk drive for analysis without causing further harm. Powerful PC-3000s and UDMA software allow us to run multiple data recoveries simultaneously. Chip-off readers and JTAG give us direct access to the logical functionality on circuit boards. Class 100 clean rooms ensure no contaminants can cause harm throughout the repair process. Not forgetting our data recovery technicians who are some of the best data recovery minds nationwide!

Our statistics for last year

hard drive data recovery tick   869 hard drives were received for diagnostic evaluation.
hard drive data recovery tick 782 of these hard drives were successfully recovered.
hard drive data recovery tick 90% data recovery success rate for hard drives.
hard drive data recovery tick 14,322 spare parts catalogued and stored in our hard drive library.

Clicking Noises

This is normally symptomatic of a head crash. Sometimes a hard drive can recover from a minor head crash. The noise is caused when the read/write head reaches the end of the platter and hits the stop, causing it to click back to it's original position. Data recovery is normally 100% successful unless there is scratching to the platters.

Grinding Noises

Grinding noises normally indicate a failing motor or bearing seizure on the spindle. This is the most time consuming data recovery with the best chances of success. All the platters need to be removed to access the motor, before reassembly using a specialist jig, aligning tracks to 20,000 tracks per inch.

No Noise And Not Recognised By BIOS

This is very difficult to define. It could simply be a blown component on the PCB that is not allowing power to reach the hard drive, or something worse - a catastrophic head failure and seizure.

Hard Drive Is Incorrectly Identified

Firmware failure is very common and at the simplest level, we can simply re-flash the firmware. If this fails though, our technicians need to rebuild the data from the source code.

Files Or File Structure Is Corrupted

If the BIOS can recognise the hard drive, but cannot access the data or mount the partition, logical failure is most likely. Chances of a successful outsome are good, providing no data recovery software has been run on the hard disk drive
